Wilderness, South Africa: Our Guide to the Garden Route's Hidden Gem
There is something about Wilderness that is difficult to explain until you've spent some time here.
Set between the mountains, indigenous forest and the Indian Ocean, Wilderness is a small coastal town on South Africa's Garden Route — and the place we are lucky enough to call home at Solyn Villa.
Many travellers drive straight through Wilderness on their way between George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. And perhaps that's part of what has allowed it to remain so special.
While some of the Garden Route's better-known destinations can become busy during the summer months, Wilderness still feels wonderfully peaceful. There are long beaches, forest trails, lakes, mountains and little restaurants — without the feeling of being in a major tourist destination.
For us, Wilderness is one of the Garden Route's hidden gems.
Why stay in Wilderness?
One of the things we love most about Wilderness is its location.
It feels quiet and surrounded by nature, yet it is incredibly central for exploring the Garden Route. George and its airport are close by, while Knysna and Plettenberg Bay can easily be visited for the day.
That means you don't necessarily have to choose between the different parts of the Garden Route.
You can wake up overlooking the ocean in Wilderness, spend the morning hiking through indigenous forest, have lunch in Knysna, explore the coastline towards Plettenberg Bay and return to Wilderness in the evening.
But some of our favourite days are the ones when we don't leave Wilderness at all.
Map of Africa: Wilderness's incredible natural viewpoint
One of the places that surprises visitors most is the Map of Africa.
High in the hills above Wilderness, the Kaaimans River has carved its way around a densely forested piece of land. Viewed from above, the resulting landscape forms the unmistakable outline of the African continent.
It's one of those places that sounds almost too perfect to be natural.
From the viewpoint, you can look across the mountains and forest towards the Map of Africa below. Turn around and you're met by an entirely different landscape: Wilderness, its lakes and the Indian Ocean stretching towards the horizon.
And you don't only have to admire the Map of Africa from above. It is also possible to canoe or hike around the natural formation itself, taking you into the landscape you've just seen from the viewpoint.

Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail: our favourite Wilderness hike
If Robberg is our favourite hike on the Garden Route, the Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail is a very close second.
The two couldn't feel more different.
Where Robberg is dramatic, exposed and surrounded by ocean, the Kingfisher Trail takes you underneath a canopy of lush indigenous trees, ferns and dense forest alongside the Touw River.
The trail takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours to complete and is around 7 km for the extended route. Much of the walk follows a comfortable path and boardwalk through the forest.
One of our favourite parts comes when you reach the river.

There is no bridge.
Instead, you step onto a small hand-operated pontoon and pull yourself across the Touw River using the rope. On the other side, the trail continues through the forest towards the waterfall.
Eventually the trees open to reveal the waterfall at the end of the trail — a beautiful place to stop, cool down and enjoy the forest before making your way back.
It's peaceful, incredibly green and one of the experiences that, for us, captures Wilderness perfectly.
A town surrounded by forests, lakes, and ocean
Wilderness isn't simply a beach destination.
The town sits within an extraordinary landscape where mountains, indigenous forest, rivers, lakes and the Indian Ocean meet within a remarkably small area.
You can walk along the beach in the morning and find yourself underneath enormous indigenous trees an hour later. The waterways around the Wilderness section of Garden Route National Park can also be explored by canoe, including routes along the Touw and Serpentine Rivers towards Island Lake.
The vegetation is one of our favourite things about living here. Huge trees, ferns and thick green forest make parts of Wilderness feel almost subtropical — particularly after rain.
It is very easy to understand why the town was given its name.
Wilderness Beach
And then, of course, there is the beach.
Wilderness Beach stretches for kilometres, with mountains behind you and the Indian Ocean ahead.
Even during beautiful weather, it is often possible to find a huge stretch of sand almost entirely to yourself.
We come here for walks, sunsets and simply to watch the ocean. During whale season, between roughly June and November, we also regularly see whales travelling along this coastline — sometimes even breaching offshore.
It's one of the things we love most about Wilderness: nature isn't something you have to plan an excursion around. It's simply part of everyday life here.
Stay in Wilderness at Solyn Villa
Solyn Villa is located in Wilderness Heights, above the town and Indian Ocean.
For us, the location offers the best of both worlds: the privacy and tranquillity of being above the village, while Wilderness Beach, the restaurants, forest trails and Garden Route National Park are only a short drive away.
It also makes Wilderness an ideal base for exploring further afield. You can take day trips towards Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Robberg, Mossel Bay or Oudtshoorn and still return to the peace of Wilderness at the end of the day.
But we always encourage guests to leave enough time to explore what's right outside the villa.
Don't just pass through Wilderness.
Walk through the forest. Pull yourself across the Touw River on the little pontoon. See Africa naturally carved into the mountains. Have lunch overlooking the ocean. Walk barefoot along the beach.
And give yourself a little time to understand why we fell in love with this place.
